Kinetics of Plasma Hemoglobin Catabolism in the Rat. I. Blood Clearance of I131 Tagged Hemoglobin.

Abstract
Rat hemoglobin was labeled with I131. KC1O4 liberated I2131 from NaI131 which became bound to tyrosine of the globin. Following intravenous injection, the I131 -tagged hemoglobin was cleared from the circulation in an exponential fashion with a t/2 of 25 minutes. Within the dose range tested (3-10 mg/100 g body weight) the clearance rate was unaffected by the dose. No renal elimination of hemoglobin could be detected. Rapid liberation of I131 from the reticulo-endothelial sites responsible for the vascular clearance was noted.
