Abstract
Recent investigations of left hand usage in non-Western societies have typically involved administration of a battery of tests to small samples. The present study took an alternative approach, surveying a large population on the single measure of hand used for writing. In a sample of 56,779 Nigerian primary schoolchildren, an overall incidence of 4.51 % was found, considerably higher than previous reports from Nigeria and other parts of Africa. In agreement with most empirical studies or theoretical proposals, a higher incidence of left-handedness for writing was observed in boys than in girls, and in urban than in rural children.
