Abstract
A prospective study to determine the relation of carcinoembryonic antigen with the epidermoid carcinoma of the esophagus is presented. The preoperative level of CEA was dosed in 57 patients with this diagnosis, treated in Santa Casa Hospital from January 1989 to April 1993. Forty-two were male and 15 female. The ages ranged from 38 to 72, with a mean of 58.2. In this group, 26.3% were staged as Ila, 38.6% as III and 35.1% as IV. The preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen was above 3.0 ng/ml in 33.35% of them, while the remaining 66.7% presented indices below or equal to 3.0 ng/ml. We found no relationship between the preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen level and stage, size, and localization of the tumor, patient's age and smoke habit. The conclusion is that the preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen dosage does not help in the management of the patients with epidermoid carcinoma of the esophagus. Keywords
