Abstract
In an otherwise thorough description of the procedures and tests required to evaluate the adolescent victim of rape, we find it disquieting that, in the recent statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Adolescence, no mention was made of the need to consider baseline and subsequent testing for the presence of antibody to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Although there are no data at present that demonstrate that HIV is commonly transmitted through rape, it would seem appropriate for clinicians involved in the assessment of sexual assault to include HIV antibody testing as an option in their management protocol.
