Abstract
The rapid technological developments and decreasing prices in the electronics industry increase the probability that computerized dairy herd data acquisition systems will become cost-effective and be adopted by dairy managers. The computerized dairy herd management system envisioned is one utilizing electronic animal identification, automatic milk weighing and recording and data entry at the parlor, the lot, the barn or the computer, itself. Output will be developed to assist the manager in decision making and management of the herd. A computerized data acquisition system interactive between the Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) center and the individual dairy farm is envisioned and has the potential to assist the dairy manager greatly. Such a system would maintain a current data file with information entered by both the dairy manager and the DHI supervisor and be readily accessible to the manager for decision making. Dairy managers can also be expected to utilize the computer data acquisition system for monitoring crop production and for financial accounting, personnel management, decision aids and rapid communications.
