Abstract
Interrupted carrier gas flow procedures have been used to provide in-line ancillary instruments sufficient time to identify GC peaks. This paper puts forward a theoretical analysis of the loss in column performance under such conditions. A linear relationship is obtained between the inverse of the column plate number and the duration of the interrupted flow interval. This relationship has been confirmed for typical packed analytic GC columns. Keywords
