OBSERVATIONS ON THE GROWTH OF DUNALIELLA EUCHLORA IN CULTURE

Abstract
Bacteria added to pure cultures of D. euchlora did not affect the growth of the alga in a mineral medium. Bacteria added to a medium containing organic nitrogenous material resulted in a stimulation of the growth of the alga, and an increase in the chlorophyll a content of the cells. With increased amounts of inorganic N, a comparable number of cells was obtained, but a comparable concentration of chlorophyll a was not obtained. If bacteria growth was initiated before algal growth in the organically enriched cultures, growth of the alga was inhibited; this inhibition could be overcome by autoclaving the culture filtrate. Growth of the alga was not inhibited in the algal filtrate, nor was growth of the bacteria inhibited in the algal filtrate. These results suggest a harmonious relationship between algae and bacteria under natural conditions.
