Abstract
Eight symphyseotomies were carried out in a small hospital in rural Africa [Namwala district, Southern Province of Zambia] by a medical generalist during a 2 yr period. There were no maternal or infant deaths. Follow-up after 3 yr demonstrated the absence of long-term complications. Five patients had later delivered, all normally, 4 of them at home unattended by medically-trained personnel. Keywords
