Abstract
Implantation of anterior pituitaries of adult male guinea-pigs into immature females of this species causes maturation of follicles, ovulation, pro-estrous vaginal changes, and proliferation in the mammary gland, but the thyroid is unaffected. Injection of acid or alkaline extracts of bovine anterior lobes causes follicular atresia and luteal hypertrophy of the cells of the theca interna, with little action on vagina or mammary glands, but with liquefaction of colloid and epithelial hyperplasia in the thyroid. Rabbit or cat pituitaries, implanted, have intermediate effects. The variable reactions are probably due to varying proportions of two gonadotropic substances in the anterior lobe. Injection of urine of pregnant women does not cause ovulation or estrus and has no effect upon the thyroid, but leads to luteinization of theca interna cells and formation of interstitial gland tissue in the ovaries.
