Abstract
One cannot very well summarize an article of this character, but it does seem that we may take encouragement from what appears to be recent, more rapid progress in relation to infant mortality. At the same time, the steadily worsening relative position of the United States among comparable countries of the world should stimulate us to further effort. Citizens of the wealthiest country in the world, whose whole history is built on concern for its people, can hardly be content when clearly unnecessary deaths, which could be prevented by increased national effort, take place. The situation needs to be a matter of permanent concern to all practicing pediatricians, as well as to the Academy.
