Abstract
AN IMPORTANT GOAL of psychopharmacological research is the development of new therapeutic agents that alleviate clinical anxiety without interfering with normal functional capability. Benzquinamide (Quantril), a new benzoquinolizine amide, acetate of 2-hydroxy-3-diethylcarbamyl-9, 10-dimethoxy-1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7-hexahydro-11bH-benzoquinolizine (see formula), has demonstrated promising selectivity of action in animal pharmacology1 and therapeutic usefulness in a variety of clinical anxiety states.2-8 Earlier studies and additional experimental findings summarized below illustrate certain pharmacological similarities of benzquinamide to earlier clinically useful psychotherapeutic drugs but also suggest notable pharmacological differences. Behavioral Effects in Animals The effects of experimental compounds on learned avoidance behavior and aggressiveness in animals are useful pharmacological indexes of potential clinical usefulness in mental and emotional disorders. Previous work in our laboratories revealed that benzquinamide is a potent disruptor of nondiscriminated avoidance behavior in both rats and monkeys.1 This activity occurred at dosage levels at which the animal'sKeywords
