UTILIZATION OF GLYCEROL BY ACETOBACTER ACETIGENUM UNDER DIFFERENT CULTURAL CONDITIONS

Abstract
A comparative study has been made of the use of glycerol by Acetobacier acetigenum inalactate-buffered glycerol medium under different cultural conditions. Cellulose, the principal product formed by the action of this microorganism on the substrate, was removed before the residual glycerol was estimated. The amount of cellulose formed in the defined medium was determined at each stage of the experimental period. The use of glycerol was followed by estimating the amount of glycerol remaining in the medium at different stages of growth of the organism. The results of the inquiry indicate a more complete use of the substrate by the bacterium in shaken cultures than under static conditions. Cellulose formation seems to be best in shaken cultures (lactate-buffered glycerol medium) whereas the yield of cellulose is considerably diminished in static cultures.
