Abstract
Twelve natural British plant communities have been studied and their species-area curves all show, with increase in area, a rapid initial rise in no. of spp., the rate of which gradually decreases. Their species-log area curves all show, with increase in area, a very gradual rise in no. of spp., the rate of which increases until, on fairly large areas, the curve becomes very steep and approximately linear. Curves of a logarithmic nature have been fitted to the observed data and a reasonably good fit was obtained. The ecological meanining of the parameters used in the equation is discussed.
