The use of compression hosiery in the care of leg ulcers

Abstract
Graduated compression hosiery is regarded as a prerequisite for the prevention of of venous leg ulceration re-occurrence. It is also used prophylactically for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (Jeffery and Nico- laides 1990) and lymphoedema (Mortimer 1995). Despite the fact that little research has been performed to support the use of compression hosiery, both medical and nursing practitioners advocate its use in clinical practice.
