Abstract
Fatal cerebral damage of the chemical type is reported in a six-year-old girl following the use of lignocaine for bronchoscopy in dosage currently advised by some authorities. Evidence is presented for considering that the cerebral damage resulted from anoxia aggravated by convulsions and the central action of the drug. The maximal safe dosage of lignocaine for bronchoscopy is considered to be less than advocated by some authorities and should not exceed 80 mg for a fit 70 kg adult, reduced proportionately for children. The extremely rapid absorption of drugs from the bronchial mucous mem brane is emphasized. Keywords
