Nuclear Orientation ofPm143

Abstract
Promethium-143 has been oriented in a crystal of neodymium ethylsulfate. The angular distribution of the 740-kev γ ray was found to be W(θ)=1(0.065±0.006)P2(cosθ) at 0.02°K. Values for the mixing ratio, δ, of the 740-kev γ ray of Nd143 were obtained as a function of the magnetic moment of the ground state of Pm143. The spin of the excited state of Nd143 was assigned as 92. An absolute lower limit of |μ|>1.0 was set on the magnetic moment of Pm143. The mixing ratio of the γ ray of Nd143 was found to lie in the range 0.23<δ(E2M1)<0.35.
