Alterations in the Temporomandibular Joint at Various Stages of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract
Summary A study of the clinical symptoms and radiologic alterations in the temporomandibular joints has been made in 65 cases of rheumatoid arthritis. Fifty-five per cent of the patients had noticed pain and tenderness from the temporomandibular joints during the course of the disease. At the time of the examination only 15 per cent had such subjective symptoms. Radiologic examination disclosed structural alterations in 78 per cent of the joints and 86 per cent of the patients. Reduction of mobility was found in 55 per cent. The frequency of structural lesions in the temporomandibular joints was dependent chiefly on the duration of the disease. The classifications and groupings that are used in medicine in evaluating the severity of the disease were relevant also for the temporomandibular joints.
