Abstract
Healthy algae release a proportion of the carbon they fix in photosynthesis as extracellular products in solution. The extent of such release is variable in both quantitative and qualitative aspects. Autolysis and decay of algal cells also leads to the release and dissolution of organic matter in natural waters. Heterotrophic bacteria may utilize the organic matter released by algae. It is probable that both the extent of such utilization and the nature of the bacterial flora are both variable. The great significance of these steps in the functioning of aquatic food webs is now recognized.Keywords
