Abstract
Large systematic differences between effective temperatures and surface gravities determined by Lane & Lester through comparison of observed flux distributions with model atmospheres, and values determined from photometric colours and indices, are shown to be strongly correlated with metallicity. Using uυbyβ photometry for 34 Am stars and 48 normal stars in five open clusters, we show that the method of Moon & Dworetsky, for obtaining reff and log g, is relatively insensitive to δ,0. We find the surface gravities of Am stars in open clusters to be the same as those of normal stars of similar effective temperatures. A small correction for metallicity should be applied to surface gravities of star with Teff ≦ 8500 K.Keywords
