Use of Home Visits for Psychiatric Evaluation

Abstract
Background and Historical Perspective The accusation is often leveled at psychiatrists by other physicians that they separate themselves from the rest of their medical colleagues and avoid the role of "doctor" as it is played by most other medical specialists and general practitioners. One of the points often made by such critics is that psychiatrists avoid home visits to a far greater extent than do other medical specialists. Some informal discussions among members of the Psychiatric Inpatient Service at the University of California Medical Center at Los Angeles were focused on such criticisms of psychiatrists early in 1958. Although we felt that there were many realistic reasons for different approaches to the practice of medicine among the various specialties, we also discussed at length whether some of the criticisms were not justified.
