THE ACTION OF BOVINE, PORCINE AND SIMIAN GROWTH HORMONE PREPARATIONS ON THE COSTOCHONDRAL JUNCTION IN THE HYPOPHYSECTOMIZED RHESUS MONKEY12

Abstract
Hypophysectomy in the rhesus monkey results in a generalized atrophy of the costochondral junction. The administration of growth hormone preparations derived from monkey pituitary glands to hypophysectomized monkeys produced striking proliferative changes in the costochondral junction. In contrast, growth hormone preparations of bovine and porcine origin are inactive in this regard. These findings extend and strengthen the concept of species specificity with reference to the action of growth hormone.
