Abstract
SUMMARY: The indications for laparotomy in 140 horses are analysed, with particular emphasis on the operative or autopsy findings in 82 cases of colic. In cases of exploratory laparotomy, the overall recovery rate was only 28 per cent but 48 of the 82 animals were considered to have inoperable lesions.The recovery rate and causes of death for each indication are briefly reviewed.RÉSUMÉ: 140 cas de laparotomie sont étudiés, en particulier ceux qui ont trait aux observations chirurgicales ou necropsiques faites dans 82 cas de coliques.Pour les cas de laparotomie exploratrice, 28% seulement furent récupérables mais 48 des 82 animaux ainsi opérés présentaient des lésions jugées inopérables.Les causes de mortalité sont rapidement passées en revue.ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Indikationen für eine Laparotomie bei 140 Pferden werden analysiert, unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der operativen oder autoptischen Befunde in 82 Fällen von Kolik. Bei exploratorischen Laparotomien belief sich die Heilungsquote auf nur 28%, aber 48 der 82 Tiere wiesen inoperable Veränderungen auf.Heilungsquote und Todesursachen für jede Indikation werden kurz besprochen.
