Abstract
Daily measurements on doves in a controlled environment indicated that they (a) eat less than usual when thirsty, (b) when 96-hr. thirsty are also, secondarily, 12-hr, hungry. Ss trained to work in a Skinner box to obtain food were tested 96 -hr. thirsty, with food reward (A), or on extinction (B). Group A obtained a score equivalent to 12-hr. hungry Ss, but did not eat the available food. Group B did not differ from satiated Ss. Ss tested on different schedules of reinforcement obtained the same relative hunger score, indicating no extinction; but extinction was evident in Ss with previous experience of working for food when thirsty. Keywords
