NEW CARRIERS FOR PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS

Abstract
Several new carriers for plant growth substances, such as indolebutyric acid, which do not contain components which are injurious to plant tissues are presented. Formulae and methods of prepn. of several stable fluid and cream emulsions employing non-toxic waxes and emulsifying agents are given. Mucilage formulae are also presented. The most useful materials tested for prepn. of emulsions were carnauba wax-lanolin mixtures for the solid phase and poly vinyl alcohol for the emulsifying agent. The most satisfactory mucilage solns. were prepared with poly-vinyl alcohol and gum arabic. The cream emulsions do not leave sticky residues as does lanolin, and they are non-toxic to plant tissues. Tomato fruit set well when these emulsions were used as carriers for indolebutyric acid. Under conditions of high temp. where lanoline and lanolin emulsions are toxic, the materials recommended are not injurious. They also offer advantages where physiologically inert carriers are desired for materials other than growth regulating substances.
