Optical amplifiers in broadband distribution systems

Abstract
Applications of both semiconductor optical amplifiers, (SOAs) and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) in broadband distribution systems are discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of both types of amplifier are addressed. The discussion is concentrated on the applications of power and inline amplifiers. In addition, wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) and optical-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) technologies, in combination with optical amplifiers are shown to provide a significant increase in the broadband system capacity and flexibility.<>Keywords
