Influence of progesterone on membrane potential and peak tension of myocardial fibres

Abstract
The effect of progesterone on membrane potential and peak tension of mammalian myocardial fibres was investigated in vitro. It was found that the hormone decreases the mechanical responses and reduces action potential duration concomitantly. On the other hand, the hormone reduces 45Ca uptake, an effect which is probably related to the shortening of the action potential. An increased 22Na efflux was also found on muscles treated by progesterone.
