Learning to Drink. II. Peer Survey of Normal Adolescents

Abstract
Adolescents surveyed 100 peers, who admitted drinking regularly, directly in their communities utilizing a 20-item, structured, behavior analysis questionnaire designed to assess the ABC of drinking: antecedents, behavior and consequences. Results are compared to an earlier investigation of adolescent drinkers hospitalized on a psychiatric ward (Stumphauzer, 1980a). Adolescent alcohol use evidently follows social learning principles. It is modeled by peers, music heroes and (in some cases) family members; it is reinforced both by drug effect and peer approval. Implications for further study, treatment and prevention are discussed.
