Effect of increasing the plasma oxygen diffusivity on experimental cryogenic edema

Abstract
Mongrel cats with experimental cryogenic brain lesions were treated with the carotenoid compound crocetin. Crocetin increases the diffusion speed of O2 through plasma, and should provide a net increase in available O2 to the capillary endothelial cell. The treated group of animals showed a significant reduction in edema compared to a comparable control group. O2 availability is apparently an important factor in vasogenic edema.
