The Inorganic Phosphate and a Labile Form of Organic Phosphate in the Gastrocnemius of the Frog

Abstract
Estimation of the inorganic phosphate in resting voluntary muscles must be done without the use of acid solutions owing to the presence of a phosphoric ester which is rapidly hydrolyzed by acid. Of the supposed "inorganic phosphate" of the resting frog''s gastrocnemius 70-80% is organic phosphate of this labile nature ("phosphagen"). In fatigue most, and in rigor all, of the phosphagen is broken down with the liberation of inorganic phosphates.
