Abstract
The distribution of flavonoid glycosides in New Zealand species of Podocarpus sensu lato strongly supports de Laubenfels' recognition of three genera. Thus, Podocarpus sensu stricto is characterised by the predominance of flavone C-glycosides and the absence of flavonol 3-O-diglycos ides; Dacrycarpus by the accumulation of 3-methoxyflavone glycosides and the presence of B-ring trihydroxylation; and Prumnopitys by the accumulation of flavonol 3-O-diglycosides and the lack of flavone C-glycosides. Non-New Zealand species of Podocarpus, Dacrycarpus, and Prumnopitys conform to these criteria. The flavonoid patterns as revealed by 2D-paper chromatography show little intraspecific variation. and are species specific. Keywords
