Patterns of Preventive Health Behavior in Populations

Abstract
Part I of this study partitioned a population''s response to an oral poliomyelitis vaccine program into components reflecting individual responses, associations within families, and the effects of the social environment on individuals and families. Similarity of behavior for individuals within families was demonstrated. Social class differences in response rates for individuals are not accompanied by changes in associations within families. Part II concerns a sample of families examined for salvage of teeth attacked by caries. Levels of tooth salvage were related to ethnic and social class sub-groups. Similarity of levels of tooth salvage for individuals within families was demonstrated for these subgroups. These results suggest maximal maternal influence on familial preventive health behavior.
