Abstract
Using a recent comprehensive tabulation of spheroidal functions, the backscattered and surface fields for a variety of prolate spheroids at end-on incidence have been computed, and selected results are presented. In the case of acoustically hard spheroids it would appear that the backscattering is determined primarily by the surface field strengths in the vicinities of the front and rear tips. Some of the consequences of this fact are discussed. Keywords
