Abstract
By computer simulation of the hard-sphere fluid, we have determined the probabilities of observing molecular centers within molecular sized volumes of the fluid. These probability distributions are found to be almost exactly Gaussian at medium densities. A maximum entropy prediction constructed from knowledge of the first two moments of the distribution and a prior distribution consistent with ideal gas behavior quantitatively predicts the occupation distribution for low and medium densities.
