Pedunculated Lipoma of the Epiglottis: Second Known Case Reported

Abstract

Because of the critical location of the epiglottis, tumors of this area affect the patency of both the upper air and food passages. They may remain undetected while developing the adjacent vallecula until they achieve considerable size. Sessile or submucosal growths are associated with progressive interference with deglutition, and speech patterns. The pedunculated tumor, after a period of undetected growth, may cause abrupt respiratory obstruction. The rarity of a pedunculated lipoma of the epiglottis is recognized and the second known case is reported.
