THROMBO-ANGIITIS OBLITERANS (BUERGER

Abstract
In a recently published paper,1we stated that there is a striking reduction in the volume of blood in thrombo-angiitis obliterans. In order to determine whether this reduced amount of blood is concentrated or normal, we studied the amounts of the individual chemical constituents in the blood. Determinations of the total amount of ash, total amount of proteins, chlorides, calcium, phosphorus, cholesterol, fasting sugar and the tolerance for sugar were made. In a small group of cases, the specimens of blood were also subjected to a determination of fractional proteins in order to see whether any striking variation could be discovered. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE A review of the literature on chemical studies of the blood in thrombo-angiitis obliterans is not illuminating, for in most instances the number of cases studied was few, and the conclusions drawn do not agree. Various investigators have focused their attention on one or
