Abstract
The reproductive capacity in the 2 spp., H. musciformis (Wulf.) Lamour. at Veraval, west coast of India, and H. valentiae (Turn.) Mont. at Pamban and Krusadai Island, south India, was studied over the different seasons from Oct. 1967-May 1969 in H. musciformis and from Aug. 1969-July 1970 in H. valentiae. Tetrasporophytes in H. musciformis occurred throughout the year with no distinct peak, while in H. valentiae maximum frequency of tetrasporophytes (85.71% and 55.0%) and cystocarpic plants (47% and 48%) at Pamban and Krusadai Island occurred in Feb. and June/July, respectively. Cystocarpic plants in H. musciformis were met with only twice at Veraval during the period of investigation, while no antheridial plants could be observed both in H. musciformis and H. valentiae.
