Ultrastructure of an Anaplastic Carcinoma of the Thyroid

Abstract
A case of anaplastic spindle-cell carcinoma of the thyroid occurring in a 59- year-old Caucasian housewife is reported. Histologic and ultrastructural technics were used to examine the carcinoma. Ultrastructural studies revealed structures, “dense bodies, ” similar to those found in the cytoplasm of normal follicular epithelium and in other neoplasms arising from follicular epithelium. These “dense bodies” are not seen in fibrosarcomas or other sarcomas which may occur rarely as primary thyroid neoplasms. This study indicates that electron microscopy is useful in differentiating between anaplastic thyroid carcinomas and sarcomas occurring within the thyroid gland.
