Abstract
In the early nineteenth century, a mass mortality of Cape fur seal, (Arctocephalus pusillus) was reported at Possession Island, southwest Africa by Captain Benjamin Morrell. An analysis of his story indicates that he may have told the truth, and arguments are presented to support the hypothesis that a toxic dinoflagellate bloom was responsible for the event. Keywords
