Abstract
It is shown theoretically that the quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes of a properly designed rib waveguide can have the same propagation constant. The conditions for achieving such mode degeneracy in typical rib waveguides are presented and discussed. Rib waveguides with degenerate polarised modes can potentially be used for forming polarisation-insensitive integrated optic devices. Keywords
