Abstract
This paper describes the methods now available for calculating the distribution of electrons in the ionosphere from observed virtual height-frequency records. Particular emphasis is given to recently developed machine and manual methods which make it practicable to produce electron distributions on a rapid, routine basis. Attention is drawn to the importance of these data for the physics of the ionosphere by quoting from the results of some existing surveys. Keywords
