Abstract
An expression is derived for the free‐energy contribution at the edge of a lattice model which has nearest‐neighbor interactions. The result is extended so as to give the surface tension between coexisting phases in the Ising Model. To test the formula, calculations are made for the two‐dimensional lattice, where the surface tension is known. It is found the numerical results systematically approach the exact results of Onsager. The nature of long‐range order in a lattice model with edges is also discussed in connection with the form of the asymtotic degeneracy of the largest two eigenvalues. Keywords
