Abstract
The consistency of a bosonic string theory in flat spacetime with one of the internal dimensions compactified on a circle is analyzed by studying the phase structure of the corresponding regularized two-dimensional field theory. It is shown that the radius of compactification must be larger than 2 √α’. One can also derive in this manner the limiting temperature for strings. Keywords
