Abstract
Pulmonary function of 11 patients was studied before and after radioiodine macroaggregated iodinated I131 serum albumin was employed for lung scans. Lung volumes, pulmonary diffusing capacity, wasted ventilation, arterial O2 and CO2 pressures and pH, and cardiopulmonary response to exercise were not affected. Thus, the use of macroaggregated iodinated 1131 serum albumin in lung scanning seems to be a safe procedure even in the presence of preexisting pulmonary vascular disease. These results contrast sharply with the marked abnormalities in pulmonary diffusion which result from lymphangiography and which may be so severe as to kill the patient.
