Abstract
Various methods were tested with respect to their qualification for the hardness determination of sapphire and sintered alumina. From the load and time dependence of the hardness of different ceramic structures we get informations about the acting deformation mechanisms. Local plastic deformation and brittle microfracture are of importance for the room temperature behaviour of this basic oxide ceramic. Keywords
