Specificity of Hemolytic Reaction in Vitamin E-Deficient Erythrocytes

Abstract
Dialuric acid hemolyzes the red cells of vit. E-deficient rats both in vivo and in vitro. The in vitro hemolysis is inhibited by alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherols, ethinylestradiol, diethylstilbestrol, and 4 substituted hydroquinones, but in vivo hemolysis is inhibited only by the tocopherols. Since the hemolytic activity of dialuric acid is decreased by catalase and since tocopherol inhibits the hemolytic activity of H2O2, it is suggested that H2O2 formation is involved in hemolysis by dialuric acid.
