Carbonization of Heavy Oils (Part 2)

Abstract
Carbonization of virgin reduced crude having high sulfur content and of pitch to which sulfur is added was studied by the polarized-light microscopic method, X-ray diffraction, solvent extraction, volatile matter and elementary analysis. At the early stage of carbonization, the mesophase of fine mosaic texture is observed with both samples, while the virgin reduced crude and pitch of low sulfur content show the formation of typical mesophase spherules. Transformation of mesophase measured with volatile matter and with quinoline (pyridine) insolubles is accelerated by sulfur.
