DOES A STIMULATION OF THE GERMINATIVE EPITHELIUM OF IMMATURE MALE RATS OCCUR AFTER TREATMENT WITH GONADOTROPIC HORMONES, AUGMENTATIVE SUBSTANCE, ANDROGENS AND VITAMIN E?1

Abstract
In albino[male] rats 20 da. old and richly fed with vit. E, a complete spermatogenesis was never obtained with these hormones in a 10-day treatment. The augmentation of gonadotrophic preps. with cock serum gave no acceleration of spermatogenesis. Adm. of gonadotrophic preps. in combination with cock serum and testosterone did not bring about sperm formation. A certain acceleration of spermatogenesis was obtained with testosterone if ant. pituitary gonadotrophin-cock serum or [male] urine gonadotrophin-cock serum was adm. These 2 combinations led to formation of sperm heads in a part of the exptl. rats by the 30th day of life. The supposition is supported that spermatogenesis in mammals is a complex process in which, besides the hormones so far studied, several still unknown factors are involved. However, maturation of the ovaries is a simpler process, involving use of gonadotrophin only.
