Abstract
Feeding mice d-,l- or dl-ethionine in a casein-sucrose diet increases the survival rate of animals inoculated intraperit. with Semliki forest virus. A single large dose of dl-ethionine injd. intraperit. within 24 hrs. preceding viral inoculation by the same route also increases the survival rate. Ethionine does not increase resistance of mice to Semliki forest virus when the virus is inoculated intracerebrally. Ethionine-treated mice which survive infection usually are immune to the virus. Methionine was not found to counteract the protective action of ethionine against the virus. Dichlorophenoxy thiouracil and closely related materials also increased the survival rate of mice inoculated intraperit. with Semliki forest virus. Benz-imidazole, 2,6-diaminopurine, and other purine derivatives tended to decrease the resistance of mice to the virus. Keywords
