Learning Through a "Real World" Experience

Abstract
What better way to teach students how businesses function than to have them create one? This approach is used at Cornell to teach an introductory "principles of management" course. At the heart of this course is the "business-group experience," whereby teams of students plan, organize, and manage actual business ventures throughout the semester. All facets of operation are the responsibility of the student managers, and the companies must be operated as if they will continue indefinitely. BGE companies are given a schedule of assignments for the semester-business plan, market research, annual report-and must work within established deadlines.
