The Effect of Sex on Weaning Weight of Range Calves

Abstract
The weaning weights of steer and heifer calves grown under range conditions have been observed for a period of eight years. The mean weights of the two sexes corrected for difference in weaning age were 443 pounds for 419 steers and 411 pounds for 444 heifers. Steers were heavier than heifers each year. The difference in favor of steer calves was highly significant. The difference in weight of sexes was tabulated for the offspring of 12 bulls, 10 of which were related. Steers were heavier than heifers for all sires. The sex × sire within year interaction was small, indicating that sex differences did not vary significantly among sires.
